Waiting

Another busy day today.  We are gearing up to go to the Badger campout which starts tomorrow.  I have a lot of laundry to fold.  I'm going to get the boys to help me start packing.  No, I have not started packing yet.  I don't think I could live with all the half-packed stuff lying around for very long.  For one thing, half-packed stuff means that little ones will get into it and unpack it and then I'll forget to pack it again or not even know it's missing.  So I save my packing for last minute, and in the meantime I add and add and add to the list.

On top of packing we need to clean our house and go to WIC and do some shopping.  And we need to make sure everyone's taken care of in the meantime.  It's no wonder we haven't found a job yet.  We haven't had time because we're always running.

And all this running has me really frustrated because now that we've made it over the hump and into the third trimester I'm starting to feel REALLY old.  When I was pregnant with one of my last two babies I told the doctor about some hip pain I was having.  And the muscles under my tummy also were getting pulled easily.  He said that happens with c-section patients because muscles and things end up being shorter after a c-section.  So I have to be careful how I move or I pull those muscles.  It's really not horrible.  I don't pull them badly, but I can feel that they're not long enough, and it doesn't feel good.  And my hip complains when I do a lot of bending over.  Yesterday I loaded the dishwasher, and when I stood up from sorting silverware into the silverware holder I thought I would die.  It hurt bad!  I also can't spend a lot of time standing around because my hip doesn't like that either.  It is absolutely ridiculous.  I'm 35, not 80!  I don't like feeling confined.  I don't like the idea that I can't chase Timmy as much as I want to on this campout.  However, it could be much worse.  Pulled muscles and aching hips are nothing to run to the doctor about.  At least I'm not having preterm labor or something.  And thank heavens the boys are home for the summer.  We've been putting them to work, and that will continue.

And in the midst of this all we've had a couple of doctor appointments.  A few weeks ago some guy from our health plan called and finagled me into making well child doctor appointments for Hyrum and Jill.  It surprises me that he only picked out those two because none of our children have been to a well child checkup in ages.  Hyrum was a toddler last time he went.  And since the doctor we were visiting here in Globe stopped doing shots we stopped going to well child visits.  So up until Hyrum was a toddler I was really good about doing those.  But since then each child has been to only a couple of them.  Timmy's last doctor visit was when he was a few days old.  He was supposed to go back at a month old for a well child checkup, but the wanted us to pay like $100 for a copay because it was a new year, and I couldn't do it.  So that was the end of that.

Anyway, so Hyrum's checkup was last week.  Yesterday was Jill's.  She is smack dab in the middle of the height and weight charts, and she checked out great in everything else.  She had lots of fun telling the doctor and his helper all about her birthday and her pink cake and pink crown.  She is now due for some shots.  Poor girly!  But as soon as those are done she'll be all set for Kindergarten in 2014.

And Jeremy had a checkup yesterday with his surgeon.  His steri strips are still clinging on tightly.  I expected that she'd take them off to check his scar, but she didn't.  She said it's best to leave them on to minimize stretching and so that the scar will be smaller.  But she did say that since Wednesday will be two weeks since his surgery he can just take them off then if he wants.  That is also the day he is allowed to bathe and swim.  So we're still not sure what his wound looks like, but we do know it's doing fine.  There hasn't been any redness or leaking fluid or anything like that.  Hooray!  And the biopsy results were in.  The doctors' guesses were right.  It was just a little fat deposit.  They didn't say what caused it, but it was not dangerous.  Hooray!

So maybe you're wondering why I titled this post waiting.  Well, we are still waiting for results from Hyrum's ultrasound.  We are waiting to take off Jeremy's strips.  We are waiting for the campout to get here.  We are tired of waiting in waiting rooms.  We are waiting to figure out where in the world we're suppose to be and what in the world kind of job we're supposed to find.  (We're searching too, of course, but we are also kind of waiting for things to slow down so we can do more searching.  It has been a busy summer!)  And we are waiting, waiting, waiting for Little Guy to come in less than 12 weeks.  Time really is short and I need to be planning out his blessing outfit, but I'm feeling kind of stumped.  I don't feel like I have any reference for how big to make it.  I need to just pull out one of the outfits I have and use that as a basis, but I'd hate to end up with the shirt to short or something.  Well, at least all the crocheting is finally done on his blankie.  All I need to do now is weave in the billions of ends.

Jill is 4!

Happy birthday, Jill!

1 week old

1 year old

2 years old

3 years old (with Aunt Kimberly - they share a birthday :)

4 years old!

The years sure fly by.  4 already?!  I'm thankful for this sweet girl!  I've been watching her extra closely today and have noticed again just how much she's grown and changed and learned in the last few months.  It's so neat to see.  She is growing into such a lovely, caring, wonderful young lady.  I love how she loves to dance and dress up pretty.  (She still says "pity" for "pretty." :) Our wait for her to come seemed so long at times.  I don't know what I would do without her!

Getting Better

I'm sorry for not updating.  We did go to the doctor on Monday.  By that time Hyrum was feeling a lot better.  He was only hurting when that spot was pushed on.  The doctor ordered an ultrasound of Hyrum's gallbladder, and that is scheduled for Thursday morning.  He says it doesn't hurt anymore but just feels weird when it gets pushed on.

Jeremy is also healing.  He's been itching.  His wound is still covered in those steri strips, so we haven't actually seen it.  But there's no redness around it.  He's had me use peroxide on it a couple of times.  I'm glad he's doing so well.  He says it doesn't hurt as long as Timmy doesn't kick it. ;)

And my dad is back to his normal activities, I hear.  Doing better all around. :)

I haven't heard from the cardiologist, but I haven't had any premature beats in a week or two as far as I know.  Hooray!

It Hurt and It Hurt and It Didn't Help

(Just so you know, that title is a quote from a joke Jeremy likes to tell.)

Jeremy is still in recovery from his surgery.  He still needs naps, and now his incision is itching.  It's a good thing we can take the big plastic sticker off tomorrow because it's falling off.  I'm a little worried about that.  It seems like it's going to hurt.  Every now and then he'll say, "My back hurts!"  Poor guy.  I hope it heals up quickly!

Some of you know this, but my dad was in the hospital the day before yesterday.  He was very dehydrated and had an infection.  The poor guy.  I'm so thankful for doctors who knew what to do to help.  He wasn't improving very much, so he was given a new antibiotic, and that has helped a lot.  He actually ate breakfast and walked around a bit today.  I am so glad!  That's wonderful!  Mama says, "You hit 60 and you start to fall apart."  Let that be a lesson to us all.  Never hit 60! ;)

And then we have Hyrum.  He has been hurting since Tuesday afternoon.  We thought it was just gas at first, but now we're pretty convinced that it's not because the pain is quite localized and is still there.  The last two days he has been especially bad.  He hasn't been eating a whole lot and he cries a lot.  It hurts him to move.  He has taken several naps as well.  I am worried about him.  We asked Aaron to have a look at him yesterday, and he also thinks it's not gas.  He thinks it may be his intestines or his gall bladder.  Hyrum is scheduled for a well child checkup at the doctor on Monday afternoon.  We asked Aaron if we could wait until then to take Hyrum in, and he said yes.  Hyrum doesn't want to go at all.  I've mentioned several times that I wanted to take him in, and he immediately let me know he didn't want to.  So I guess we will wait until Monday.  Hopefully we can get it figured out quickly and have him all better soon.  I feel bad, though.  Poor guy!

Timmy and the Telly

Yesterday we went to Wal-Mart and picked up a DVD set with those old weird TV shows from Cartoon Network: Ed, Edd, and Eddy; Courage the Cowardly Dog; Johnny Bravo; and Dexter's Laboratory.  I suppose those last two aren't all that weird, but there's no denying the first two are.  Still, they are family favorites. :)

So we were watching some of the episodes last night, and Timmy was picking up on things here and there.  He started saying, "Jungle Boy," right away (a character on Johnny Bravo).  I think he liked that one because he was already talking about Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy ("Merman a Bah Boy") from Spongebob.  I can't remember what else he was saying last night, but it was funny.  Well, today he found his little dog toy that you pull behind you on a string.  He was dragging it around, and every now and then he'd say, "Stupid dog!"  That is what Eustace calls Courage.  Darn it!  If it wasn't so cute I'd try to get him to not say it.

He seems to be sensitive about what we can repeat lately.  If we talk about something he's been talking about (for, example, Jungle Boy), he'll scowl and say, "Don't a Jungle Boy!"  And sometimes he'll even hit us to punctuate.  Hmmmm...  I'm not sure how to convince him not to hit.  I'm sure he will learn.  His siblings all do - sort of - eventually.  His scowls and growls are so funny, though.

In other news, Jeremy is doing well overall.  He slept that first day away, except that when he wasn't sleeping he was throwing up.  He couldn't keep anything down at all.  And this wasn't normal old throwing up either.  This was projectile vomiting.  I was so worried about him.  And it seemed like he threw up harder each time, even though there was nothing in his stomach.  Thank heavens that is done!  He threw up for the last time at about 11:00 the first day, and the second day he slept a lot as well but didn't throw up.  He was able to eat just fine.  Today is the third day.  Both yesterday and today he has been feeling pain in his hurt.  I'm not sure exactly how it is because he doesn't complain much at all.  I know it hurts when Timmy kicks it.  And I know it hurts when we go over bumps in the car.  But he's up and doing mostly everything like normal.  He's even been back on the job hunt today.  Oh, joy!  I don't envy him that job. :( But I'm thankful he's doing better and was at least able to shower today.  I'm thankful that he's healing and not throwing up anymore.  Hooray!

All Done

Well, surgery is done.  I picked Jeremy up at about 9:00, and he has been resting in bed since.  I picked up his Vicodin, and I'm wondering if he'll use it.  I also got lots of gatorade and some saltines and soup.  The poor guy has nauseous.  I keep thinking I should have taken a picture of him being wheeled out in that wheel chair.  I am pretty sure he wouldn't appreciate that.  He wore his sweats and took nothing at all with him.  He wanted to be comfy and they said to leave all his valuables at home.

Now, about this lump - it was 2-3 inches across.  It was on his lower back an inch or two away from his spine and just above his waist.  The doctor thinks it's probably just some fat that got trapped between skin layers or something like that.  It could be caused by a bad bug bite or getting hit right there or something.  He says that when he was little he was bit by a black widow right there, so we wonder if that's the cause.  It took a long time to go away, but it did, and then this lump appeared probably 3 years ago.  Maybe more.  I guess we just finally got around to getting it looked at, and here we are.  They are doing a biopsy on it, and the results should be in in time for his follow-up appointment on the 24th.

So he has Vicodin if he needs it, and he's supposed to take Ibuprofen every 8 hours whether he needs it or not.  He can't shower until Friday, and he can't bathe or swim until the 26th.  I thought I was going to need to do dressing changes and whatnot, but apparently not.  They have a clear bandage on there, she says, and that should be taken off on Sunday in the shower.  And there are bandage strips under that that should be left alone until they fall off.  I really haven't seen any of this.  I just put him to bed.  I assume they're the same kind of strips that get stuck on my tummy after the staples are taken out from a c-section.  So, no, I don't have to change dressings.

I keep remembering how recovery from a c-section is.  It is not fun.  He is already moving more quickly and easily than I do after a c-section, but really that's not too surprising.  A c-section is a bigger deal involving a bunch of layers of tissue that have to heal.  He came out looking so pale, though.  And the smell of food bothered him when we made lunch a few minutes ago.  I'm hoping he'll be ready to at least drink something by this evening.

Dang!  The poor guy.  I want to do something to help him, but right now I've done all I can (put him to bed and got his prescriptions).  It really might make me feel better if I could do something to help, but all the help he needs right now is rest.  So we'll keep the kiddos out of there and just leave him alone until he asks for something.  I am really thankful, though, that it's over and went well!

Kind of Unnerving

Just before 6:30 this morning I took Jeremy to the hospital and dropped him off at the outpatient surgery place.  Yep, today is the day.  I kind of wish they could have done it in the afternoon or later in the morning.  It's not nice to make me do hard things when I'm not quite awake.  I was definitely wiping away tears as I drove away.  I guess now I have a little taste of how he feels.  He's taken me to be cut open 3 times, and I was cut open one other time when we didn't expect it (when Hyrum was born).  He is good at putting on a brave face.

Anyway, I am feeling pretty nervous this morning.  His surgery is minor and shouldn't take long, but he has to be sedated.  I don't like sedation.  It's better than the alternative, but sedation by itself scares me.  I'm not sure when he'll be done.  It's probably a good thing the boys have day camp today.  Because Jeremy's not home I have to take all 6 children, but at least I'm staying busy, right?
